Everything you used to do online still exists.

On January 7, 2026, a writer signed “rave” published “Digital Cargo Cult: How Zoomers Ruined Old Internet Nostalgia” on Worlio. Worlio archives oldnet software, files, and rooms that predate the app store. The essay argues that a large share of “old internet” revival copies the look of early sites and skips the structure that made those sites usable.

The claim, without the generation fight:

People treat 2014 YouTube layouts, Frutiger Aero palettes, Y2K type, glitter GIFs, and Carrd pages as the old web. Those surfaces were named and sold as aesthetics after 2018. Recreating them does not restore independent hosting, durable URLs, or mail and chat that can leave one machine and arrive on another.

A cargo cult builds the shape of an airstrip. A lot of revival work builds the shape of a 2004 homepage and leaves the rest on Discord, Reddit, YouTube, and the other four-to-eight firms that already own the hallway.

What rave says the early public web actually used: people ran servers, wrote pages, learned protocols, kept pseudonyms, and published without a corporate gate. What that produced, in rave’s list: independence, durability, community, learning, privacy. Neon was optional.

rave names XMPP, in service since 1999, as one surviving tool that still does federated chat. That mention is enough. The rest of this piece is the directory.
